Purpose of the Website
The Tokyo Temp website serves three purposes: (1) to publish original research on urban thermal lag in the Tokyo metropolitan area; (2) to provide free, publicly accessible weather data and thermal analysis tools; and (3) to sell the Tokyo Thermal Analysis Guide PDF, a reference document that compiles our annual research findings.
The majority of our content is provided free of charge and without registration. We do not display advertising. Our revenue comes from PDF guide sales and occasional consulting engagements related to urban thermal analysis.
Data Sources and Accuracy
Our thermal lag data is derived from publicly available meteorological records, government geographic information systems, and our own field measurements. We describe our methodology in detail on our Data Sources page and publish our limitations openly.
Live weather data displayed on this site is sourced from the Open-Meteo API, a free weather data service. We do not control the accuracy or availability of this third-party data. For official weather forecasts, always consult the Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA) or your national meteorological service.
We are not affiliated with the Japan Meteorological Agency, the Tokyo Metropolitan Government, the University of Tokyo, or any other governmental or academic institution. We are an independent research group. The thermal lag values and analyses published on this site represent our own work and do not necessarily reflect the views of any organization with which our team members may be affiliated.
Commercial Activities
Tokyo Temp Research LLC sells a digital product: the Tokyo Thermal Analysis Guide PDF. The current price is $14.00 USD. Payment processing is handled by third-party payment processors (Stripe and/or PayPal). We do not store credit card information on our servers.
We also provide urban thermal analysis consulting services on a limited basis. These engagements are negotiated individually and are subject to separate contracts.
Intellectual Property
Our thermal lag data is published under the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike 4.0 International License (CC BY-SA 4.0). Our written essays and analysis are copyrighted by Tokyo Temp Research LLC. The Tokyo Thermal Analysis Guide PDF is a commercial product licensed for individual use. See our Terms of Use for complete intellectual property terms.
Conflicts of Interest
Tokyo Temp Research LLC has no financial relationships with building material manufacturers, construction companies, real estate developers, air conditioning manufacturers, or energy utilities that could create a conflict of interest with our research. We do not accept sponsored content, paid placements, or advertising on our website. We do not receive commissions from product recommendations.
Kenji Mori occasionally provides paid consulting services to architecture firms seeking thermal analysis for their projects. These consulting engagements are separate from Tokyo Temp's public research and are disclosed to clients as distinct services. Findings from consulting work do not appear on this website unless they are independently verified through our standard research process and published under the same open data terms as all our other work.
Yuki Tanabe has no current employment relationships with meteorological agencies or weather service companies. Rei Nakamura has no current employment relationships with data analytics firms operating in the urban planning sector.
Funding and Revenue
Tokyo Temp Research LLC is entirely self-funded through its own revenue. We have received no government grants, no private foundation funding, no venture capital investment, and no academic institutional support. Our annual operating budget of approximately $8,000 is covered by:
Tokyo Thermal Analysis Guide PDF sales (approximately 40% of revenue), urban thermal analysis consulting for architecture and planning firms (approximately 35% of revenue), and direct contributions from the founding team members (approximately 25% of revenue, treated as capital contributions).
This financial structure ensures our editorial independence. We have no funders to please, no granting agencies to report to, and no investors to satisfy. Our only obligation is to produce accurate, useful research and publish it transparently.
Content Standards
All content published on this website is written or reviewed by at least one member of our research team before publication. Scientific claims are supported by data from our own measurements, publicly available meteorological records, or peer-reviewed literature, with sources cited. Opinions and interpretations are clearly distinguished from factual reporting.
We do not publish content that we know to be inaccurate. When we discover errors, we correct them promptly and document the correction on our Corrections page. We do not delete or retroactively alter published content without noting the change.
Editorial Independence
Tokyo Temp maintains complete editorial independence. No external entity — corporate, governmental, or academic — has the right to review, approve, or modify our content before publication. Our research team determines what to study, how to analyze it, and how to present it without interference from any sponsor, advertiser, or affiliate organization. This independence is fundamental to our mission of producing trustworthy, unbiased urban thermal science.
